I have a veterinary science degree and PhD and have conducted research on animal behaviour, animal welfare, and human–animal interactions (anthrozoology). My work has taken me to various academic institutions: University of Queensland, University of Cambridge, and University of Sydney.

For over 25 years, I have been the editor-in-chief of the journal Anthrozoös, a multidisciplinary journal of the interactions between people and other animals, and have worked with publishers such as Purdue University Press, Berg, Bloomsbury, and Routledge.

I am a professional member of the Institute of Professional Editors.

I have also co-edited books such as Companion Animals & Us (Cambridge University Press); organized national and international conferences; reviewed manuscripts, theses, and book proposals; and have published many papers in journals such as Anthrozoös, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Journal of Social Issues, Australian Veterinary Journal, and The Veterinary Record.
