I offer a range of academic editing services, including:
Basic copy-editing/language editing: This involves editing the language of your paper: correcting spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It is sometimes referred to as line editing. References can also be checked to ensure that they are formatted appropriately.
Substantive/structural editing: This is similar to basic copy-editing in that spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors will be corrected. However, it also involves a deeper, more thorough review of your paper – ensuring that its structure, content, language, style, and presentation are clear and that it flows well and is easy to understand. This may involve removing/rearranging sentences or paragraphs. Additional content may also be requested.
Proofreading:This involves checking that your paper is ready to be published/submitted. This includes ensuring the paper follows the house style of your publisher and that there are no remaining spelling, punctuation, or grammar errors (it is expected that your paper has already undergone basic copy-editing or substantive/structural editing).
The Types of Document I Edit
I am happy to edit papers/documents from the social and natural sciences: for example, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, veterinary science, zoology.
How Long I Take to Edit a Document
That depends on the type of editing I’m doing and how much work the paper requires. Here are some rough guidelines on how many pages I can do per hour:
- Basic copy-editing: 8–14 pages (2,000–3,500 words) an hour
- Substantive/structural copy-editing: 2–5 pages (500–1,250 words) an hour
- Proofreading: 10–15 pages (2,500–3,750 words) an hour
Note: based on one page being roughly 250 words.
What I Charge
No consultation fee: I don’t charge for my time when a client and I are emailing, phoning, or videoing each other trying to determine if I am the right person for the job. Once we have agreed on what you want me to do, I will create an agreement/contract for us to sign. Then, before I start any work, I require a one-third payment/deposit. Once the work is complete, I will send an invoice for the remaining payment.
Fee for editing/proofreading: I charge, in Australian dollars, $85.00 per hour (+ 10% Goods and Services Tax).
